چکیده

Abstract Due to the limited processing of spectral cues, voice discrimination might be restricted in cochlear implant (CI) users. A very basic representation of different voices is given by the speaker gender. Important characteristics are the fundamental frequency (f0) and the vocal tract length (VTL) which influences formant frequencies. Based on a natural utterance these parameters were explicitly modified and the resulting psychoacoustic effects were assessed in a speaker gender discrimination and a speaker gender identification experiment. It could be shown, that CI-users needed about two times higher changes in f0 and more than three times higher changes in the formant frequencies (F1 – F3) to discriminate different voices. However, this discrimination ability was obviously sufficient to identify the speaker gender, since the results did not differ much between CI-recipients and normal listeners in the identification experiment. The most important parameter was f0, whereas VTL alone did not allow consistent identification ofthe speaker gender. For speaker identification in general VTL parameters might be more important. EFFECT OF A UDITORY-VERBAL REHABILITATION ON VOICE PARAMETERS IN CHILD COCHLEAR IMPLANT USERS

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of auditory-verbal rehabilitation on voice parameters after implantation with cochlear implants 2 and 5 months after rehabilitation and compare them with normal voice children (under 12 years of age). A perceptive and electroacoustic evaluation of voice was carried out through a digital analysis after implantation and rehabilitation. The study was pe...

Voice discrimination in cochlear-implanted deaf subjects.

The human voice is important for social communication because voices carry speech and other information such as a person's physical characteristics and affective state. Further restricted temporal cortical regions are specifically involved in voice processing. In cochlear-implanted deaf patients, the processor alters the spectral cues which are crucial for the perception of the paralinguistic i...

Hearing history influences voice gender perceptual performance in cochlear implant users.

OBJECTIVES The study was carried out to assess the role that five hearing history variables (chronological age, age at onset of deafness, age of first cochlear implant [CI] activation, duration of CI use, and duration of known deafness) play in the ability of CI users to identify speaker gender. DESIGN Forty-one juvenile CI users participated in two voice gender identification tasks. In a fix...

Reduced visual discrimination in cochlear implant users.

The aim of the study was to investigate low-level visual function in cochlear implant users. Spatial frequency discrimination was assessed in 16 adults with normal hearing and 18 adults with profound deafness who had a cochlear implant. Thresholds were measured with sinusoidal gratings using a two-alternative temporal forced-choice procedure combined with an adaptive staircase. Cochlear implant...
